Far from the misunderstanding of some, Bach did not let the mathematics write the music for him. Hear in this the full expression of emotion, the complex development, the apparent simplicity. Hear in this the cello sing! Hear an INSTRUMENT brought to LIFE with FEELING!

No version of this song can match this passion and intensity. He seems to hit the mark just right with this song.

Bach apparently gave no tempo marking for the first movement. It is often played fast which gives one the feeling of riding a train through beautiful scenery and wishing it were moving a little slower to afford a better taking in of the beauty. I find this very languid tempo, however, a little too slow, which gives the effect of watching the scenery out the window on a cloudy day with light raindrops on the glass. That more serene view is captivating at first but tends to not have the energy and upbeat, dance-like charm to hold our gaze throughout. I would find a happy medium, which gave it more forward motion, life and spirit but did not obscure the unwinding of Bach's spinning lines and interplay to be most satisfying.
